April is Earth Month — but the planet does not need saving. It needs us to listen.
This month, we center Indigenous voices at the frontline of ecological justice.

April’s Book Pick: We Will Not Be Saved by Nemonte Nenquimo & Leila Salazar-López
Genre: Memoir/Manifesto/Open Letter
From: Waorani territory, Ecuador & the U.S. (Chicana activism)

About the book:
This is not a plea — it’s a powerful open letter to the Western world. In it, Waorani leader Nemonte Nenquimo calls out the colonial violence of extractivism, denounces the destruction of the Amazon, and urges a radical return to respect for land, life, and ancestral knowledge.
Part memoir, part spiritual call to action, it’s a fierce and deeply personal expression of love, rage, and refusal — co-written with environmental justice advocate Leila Salazar-López.

Why we chose it:
Earth Day isn’t complete without Indigenous leadership.
Nenquimo’s voice cuts through greenwashing and saviorism. She reminds us that the Amazon is not a resource to be protected by outsiders — it is a living home, already fiercely defended by its people.
Let’s talk about environmental justice through a decolonial lens — one that centers land-based, ancestral resistance and amplifies women on the frontlines.

Haven’t read the book? Come anyway!
FMV Book Club is about thoughtful conversations sparked by the book’s themes — not perfection. Whether you’ve read it all, just started, or want to listen and learn, you are warmly welcome. Bring a friend!
