Exploring the Havrå Forest

Shared by Arne Vassenden | Traced by Marco Bruzzone

Gain a deep understanding of Havrå høstingsskog and lauveng, a traditional managed forest, through a combination of local knowledge and creative exploration. You will learn about the complex relationship between the cultural landscape, biological diversity, and the practices of the adjacent Havråtun.

Each day will include sessions in the Havrå Forest, located on Osterøy. Arne Vassenden, who has lived closely with the forest for many years and has built a large archive of traditional forestry methods, will guide you through detailed observations of selected trees, revealing their life cycles and roles within the forest. The course aims to open new perspectives and expand knowledge to encourage a deeper connection with the forest. Through drawing and other creative methods you will study and map the forest, allowing for both factual and imaginative exploration.

Arne Vassenden has been restoring and caring for the forest at Havrå for 8 years. He is a forestry expert with extensive experience in traditional forest practices holding a huge archive of historical ways of sustaining høstingsskogar and local use of resources.

Marco Bruzzone is an interdisciplinary artist living in Berlin. At the core of his practice is an interest in the world that is not, in and of itself, unique to art. His practice is akin to scientific enquiry (it is open-ended) and meditation (it arises from a disciplined attempt to drift). His subject matter is the post-human condition, using sculpture, performance, installation, video, sound, and painting to reflect on the uncomfortable present and the uncertain future. In particular, his current work meditates on the waste, remains, and patina that embody these temporalities.
