Turf Laying at Jiennagoáhti
Shared by Sander Andersen and Trine Samuelsen Hansen | Traced by Karen Werner
Through hands-on participation this course offers insight into Sámi building traditions. You will be partaking in the restoration of Jiennagoáhti (lyttegamme/listening lodge) – an artwork dedicated to listening in the Bergen mountains. Over four days, you will help source and prepare turf to repair the roof foundation of the building. The course blends practical skills with cultural insights, providing a rare chance to learn the techniques and architecture behind traditional Sámi goáhti structures.
Sander Andersen, will guide participants through the restoration, sharing his expertise in working with Sámi building techniques. While architecture student, Trine Samuelsen Hansen will contribute her knowledge of Sámi spatial practices and the cultural significance of goáhti architecture, enriching an understanding of Sámi heritage.
Jiennagoahti is an art project initiated by artist Elin Már Øyen Vister in dialogue with Sámi artist and architect Joar Nango. Located near Fløyen, Bergen, the artwork is an indoor and outdoor space for the dissemination and learning of Sámi culture, architecture, and language for the residents of Bergen/Birgon. Jiennagoáhti is run and curated by Trine Samuelsen Hansen and Elin Már Øyen Vister.
Sander Andersen is an experienced carpenter with extensive expertise in Sámi traditional building techniques. He has worked on several projects that preserve and celebrate Sámi architectural heritage.
