When the local newspaper writes that the Store Lungårdsvann seafloor is cleaned and the fish are rushing back, what does it sound like? Underwater, and above water? What about Lille Lungårdsvann; who lives there? And what can a snippet of time tell us about the situation? What do our ears, nose, skin - our perception - say about the situation? And what is happening right outside BAS, do we know what lives there, centimetres beneath the surface? Do we need to take measures before we dare to dive in?
How can we make places and situations where we can look, listen, sense and learn, through repeatedly going back to the same place, talking to people and finding information in different ways?
We will be going out to investigate and find questions though listening closely, looking, drawing, and sharing our findings. Rowing in wooden boats, walking, listening with our ears, with the help of hydrophones and microphones, using pencils, our memory and recording techniques to find questions and then investigate the questions we find.
Jana Winderen is an artist with a background in mathematics, chemistry and fish ecology. Her practice pays particular attention to audio environments and to creatures which are hard for humans to access, both physically and aurally – deep under water, inside ice or in frequency ranges inaudible to the human ear. Her activities include site-specific and spatial audio installations and concerts, which have been exhibited and performed internationally in major institutions and public spaces. Her work has been exhibited globally, including at MoMA, IHME Helsinki, and Art Basel Miami.
Nancy Couling is a senior researcher & coordinator MAS in Urban & Territorial Design, ETH Zurich and Associate Professor at BAS. Nancy is an architect, teacher and researcher whose focus has been the urbanisation of the sea. This topic is linked to urgent questions which Nancy has also approached through teaching and as an experienced architectural and urban design practitioner; linking design practice through all scales, analysing complex contexts and designing with strategies of time. Her interdisciplinary and intercultural skills have been gained through direct experience in diverse cultural contexts since departing her native New Zealand.
Bernice Donszelmann is an artist and writer based in London. Her artistic practice spans installation, sculpture, performance and text. Recent exhibitions and projects have included solo exhibitions three tides passed (installation, Coleman Projects, London 2024), Level (installation, APT Gallery, London 2022), DESCRIPTOR (Five Years Gallery, London, 2015) and participatory performances Incandescent (2017/18) and [these roarers] at the Whitstable Biennale in 2018 (organised jointly with Lucy Gunning and Helen Robertson).
