The Anti-War Initiative invites you to an open meeting on "How can the UN's role as a peacekeeping organization be strengthened?"

We have two speakers (see below) with subsequent discussion. The presentations and discussion at this meeting will form the basis for what AKI will play towards the "Summit of the future". The meeting is free of charge and refreshments will be available for purchase at the bar.

Ingeborg Breines, former president of the International Peace Bureau and former director of UNESCO. She will give a brief presentation of the UN system - its origins, ideals, goals, practices and challenges today - including the Security Council and veto power, the General Assembly, the International Courts of Justice, the Human Rights Council, the Specialized Agencies, the humanitarian organizations.

Terje Valen, historian and political activist for many decades, will talk on the most important conditions for the UN to function according to its charter. The non-aligned movement's perception of conditions and developments in the world will be given ample space for dicsussion.
