‘Jenin, Jenin’ (2002)—Dir. Mohammed Bakri—Supplementary School Film Club

Date: 01.10.2024
Time: 17:30-20:30
Host: Supplementary School Film Club, Bergen4Palestine, Palestinakomitten i Bergen

Facebook event

For the last gathering of The Supplementary School Film Club for 2024, we are honoured to collaborate with Reading4Palestine, hosted by Bergen4Palestine, a Bergen based organisation centering full liberation and freedom of Palestine.
This evenings film has been chosen by Aktivister for Palestina, an action group who came together in 2023 and organised around the student camp at University of Bergen this summer.

Free to join and light vegetarian dinner served while we watch.

“Initially banned by the Israeli Film Board and still a source of controversy, Bakri's documentary bears witness to the aftermath of the April 2002 Israeli reconquest and partial demolition of the Jenin refugee camp. The documentary hears survivors presenting their own testimony and presents an often harrowing portrayal of a Palestinian community responding to trauma.” Palestine Cinema.

Winner - Carthage International Film Festival - Best Film, 2002.

As we approach 365 days of Israeli’s most recent violent atrocities, we return to Bakri’s 2002 film, to look back to help us move forward in solidarity, hope, grief and rage. The Supplementary School Film Club is an intersectional film club hosted by artist, Amber Ablett where we prioritise the stories, needs and comfort of those marginalised by our society. We watch films together to look at the intersections of oppressive structures and how different communities tackle and dismantle them. For each gathering, an invited guest is asked to chose a film that has inspired their resistance work, we always serve food and conversation follows each film lead by the person who chose it. Over 2023, we have gathered together to watch 10 films together exploring the intersections of white supremacy, heteronormativity, colonialism, capitalism and imperialism and the violences and movements of resistance around them.

Aktivister for Palestina are a student organization that supports Palestine's liberation struggle against the Zionist and racist occupier Israel. We want to draw attention to Israel's genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. We work against all forms of racism and discrimination. We reject the occupying power's attempt to equate anti-Semitism with criticism of this Zionist state project, and their attempt to brand Palestinian civil society and legitimate liberation struggle as terror.
Bergen4Palestine is a Bergen based organisation working to strengthen local anti-imperialist movement centering full liberation and freedom of Palestine. Reading4palestine is a political education initiative by Bergen4Palestine, conducted at Bergen Assembly striving to build the anti-imperialist political consciousness.
