Bergen4Palestine, DER and Tekstallmenningen, the journal and small publishing center, invite you to Reading4Palestine and journal reading circle for those who want to learn more about Palestine. The reading circle will take place at Bergen Assembly's premises in Bergen (Halfdan Kjerulfs gate 4, Bergen).

The conversation will be led by Karen Berge and Osama Shaheen. The reading circle will be based on the latest issue of the journal DER. DER is a journal in Norwegian and Arabic, which serves as a platform for dissemination and discussion of topics related to culture, language, lifestyle and values.

  • The door opens at 17:00. We start reading at 17:30. A light dinner will be served.
  • We start reading at 17:15 and take about 20 minutes break for Iftar around 18:20.
  • We will arrange space for those who wish to pray before Iftar.
  • It is not a requirement to be registered for the event, just drop in.

The text to be discussed is "Nakba, Sumud and Intifada: A Personal Dictionary of Palestinian Loss and Resistance" by Rana Issa, which was published in the latest issue of the journal DER. "Nakba, Sumud and Intifada" is a biographical text in which Rana Issa looks back on growing up in a Palestinian family where politics and the liberation struggle characterized everyday life. With a background in language and translation work, Issa uses three key concepts in the Palestinian liberation struggle to explore how language, identity and perspective are closely intertwined in the world's longest ongoing and unresolved refugee situation.

Rana Issa is the artistic director of the Oslo-based organization "Masahat For Arab Culture In Exile, and published the book "The Modern Arabic Bible" in 2023.

The text will be available in Norwegian, Arabic and English. The reading circle is free to attend, and participants can receive a free copy of the journal DER in advance.

The Journal Reading Circle is supported by the Bergen Foundation and Bergen Municipality.
