During Ekko, Liz Harris aka Nivhek presents the work "Engine" in two different forms: both as a concert version and as a sound installation.
The concert version "Engine" is based on her fascination with acceleration and engine sound - a source of abundance, power, sex, deconstruction, capitalism, pollution, transformation and life. A guttural bass sound and a mirror of organic sounds reminiscent of heartbeats, breathing and blood circulation. The work is performed together with an original film by the experimental cinematographer Takashi Makino.
For over 18 years, Liz Harris aka Grouper aka Nivhek has explored evocative and electronic soundscapes through her unique ambient and drone soundscape - acoustic or electric guitars, piano, pedals, vocals, reverb, field recordings and harmonies. The result is always minimalistic and powerful.
She is a media-shy artist, but has a global following. She rarely does interviews and talks even more rarely about her music. In 2019, she released one of her most uncompromising and minimalist releases to date "After its own death / Walking in a spiral towards the house" under the alias Nivhek, released on Yellow Electric - her own label.
In 58 minutes, she reflects in many ways her artistic practice, also as a visual artist, where she creates intricate black ink drawings. Everything she does expresses a tension between wholeness and dissolution, how sounds, or lines, form patterns that break apart, mutate, and reunite. With a strong focus on single elements, be it a line, a string on a guitar, or a note in the voice, the result is always meditative and opens the way to unleash inner feelings.
