Who will produce our food in the future? Join SPIRE for a deep dive into agricultural policy with a lecture by Kathrine Kinn.
The average age of Norwegian farmers is 52. Only half of today's farmers would recommend their children to take over. Much of this is due to high workloads and low incomes. There's a lot of talk about sustainable food production, but what about social sustainability when farmers earn below the poverty line? Why has the number of farms been reduced by 75 per cent in the last 50 years? If today's farmers can't produce our food in the future, who will? What are the solutions and how realistic is it to turn pessimism into optimism in the industry? Why is it important for those who eat food to know about all this?
Kathrine Kinn (b. 1992) is a farmer, sociologist, author and regular columnist for Klassekampen. Kathrine works on a daily basis as a technical advisor for the Norwegian Farmers' Union, while at the same time building up a disused farm in Telemark. In this talk, Kathrine will explain how agricultural policy works in practice and how today's agricultural policy has a number of unfortunate consequences.
You will get answers to questions such as:
- Why has the number of farms decreased by 75 per cent in the last 50 years?
- Why do fewer and fewer farmers want their children to take over the farm?
- If today's farmers can't produce our food in the future, who will?
Kathrine will not only tell us about the bleak situation in Norwegian agriculture, but also what we can do in the future and what solutions exist. Because the solutions do exist!
The event is free and open to all. Welcome to Bergen Assembly on 17 October at 18:00!
